I came across these massive tangles of roots, trunks, and branches—between 12-16 feet high and nearly double that in width—lining a state park beach in New Jersey at fairly regular intervals. Their imposing presence and uncanny placement made them seem like sentinels guarding the beach or totems for some nature rite.
